I think that Harvard Study has now found to be fictional. Michael Neill writes about it in his Supercoach book. So all the more reason not to take goals too seriously! I think projects are the better alternative for creative people.
John
PS. I wrote a post on "Your goals won't make you happy": http://bit.ly/nogoals

John,

I got way side tracked. It's been more than a year that you sent this post. This blog went down shortly after you posted. I apologize that I didn't respond and thank you.

Your insights are right on the mark. I appreciate them.
Please come back often.

This blog is now up for good. I hope to hear from you again.

This is a great post, and I think it also speaks to why a great many people don't succeed at what they are up to--They don't have a truly powerful way of holding what they are out to accomplish. When your vision becomes just another item on your to do list. It doesn't really pull you into action.

It reminds me when I took programs of Landmark Education, how I created a future or vision, the idea of which was to impact you in the present--Almost exactly as you describe a "creation that is pulling them towards completion".

I think there's a place for goals inside of these grand creations, but only as a marker to make sure you're on track, not as an end in itself, or else all the juice goes out of it.
